Susan Yates to Speak on Trusting God in Life's Transitions PDF Print E-mail

Trusting God in every circumstance can be a challenge for most Christians.

"We tend to think stability should be the norm for our life, but the reality is that most of us live in transition," said Susan Yates, author and wife of The Rev'd Dr. John Yates, Rector of The Falls Church. Trusting God regardless of fluctuating circumstances will be the topic of an address that Mrs. Yates will deliver on November 20 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Church of the Epiphany in Herndon, Va.

The event is being sponsored by the women’s ministry arm of the Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA) and women of the Anglican District of Virginia are encouraged to attend and bring a friend. Mrs. Yates noted that the topic of transition in life applies to all women regardless of their marital state or age.

"Strong marriages and families are keys to a healthy society. There are so many broken homes and so many people who have come from broken homes who do not want to repeat that pattern," she said, noting that it is her calling to focus on marriage and family issues.

"The CANA message will focus on practical issues, but I will share the Gospel. It's a good opportunity to bring someone along whether it's your neighbor, the gal you work out with at the gym or someone you work with at the office," she said.

Over the years, Mrs. Yates has written 13 books and contributed to several others while speaking nationally and internationally on marriage, parenting and women's issues. She and her husband have five adult children and 11 grandchildren.

Having children is one life transition that Susan works to help and encourage others though. "I had five kids in seven years, including a set of twins, so I know where busy moms are coming from." One piece of advice she shared was to "lower your expectations for that season of life and lean on other mothers who are in the same situation. It can be a really lonely time and you'll need a support group or Bible study for young moms." Mrs. Yates addresses the issue much more deeply in her book And Then I Had Kids.

Focusing on the address that she'll deliver at Church of the Epiphany, Susan said, "It doesn't matter if you are newly married, single, a parent of toddlers or teens or an empty nester, life is not calm. And then throw in moves, illnesses, political or job upheaval, financial challenges, and it all adds up to insecurity."

"In the midst of life's transitions each of us yearns for a sense of stability. Sometimes we wonder if God is still in control, and we long to feel His involvement in our life. On November 20, we'll look at seven keys that will enable us to have a deepening sense of trusting Him regardless of our situation," Mrs. Yates said.
